WHERE
IS SEYMOUR?
Seymour
is located in the centre of Victoria just off the Hume Highway, one
hour’s drive from Melbourne, Shepparton, Bendigo or Benalla. In
the heart of the Goulburn Valley, visitors to Seymour Show may wish
to stay overnight and visit the many wineries, thoroughbred studs and
other tourist attractions in the region.
ABOUT
THE SOCIETY
History:
The Agricultural Association was started in the Seymour area in 1858.
H. C. Boyd was the first President, P Tiernan Vice President and J.
Brooke Secretary. This organization arranged exhibits of livestock,
grain shows and an annual ploughing competition.
By 1864 the Society was organising quarterly fairs for
the sale of cattle, sheep and agricultural produce.
Between 1864 and 1882 the society became known as the
Seymour and Nagambie United Agricultural and Pastoral Association. Annual
shows alternated between the two towns.
The first Seymour Show of which there is a record was
held on September 28th, 1859 in the yards of the Royal Hotel. In 1884
new showgrounds were set up in the area between the Catholic Church
and the railway line. In 1900 the showgrounds were sold with Government
approval to the Roman Catholic Church, however the show continued to
run on these grounds until 1903.
The 1897 Show was the last held under the United Seymour
and Nagambie Society. In 1900 a meeting proposed to organise a new Agricultural
Society to be called Seymour Agricultural Society and to establish an
annual show.
1907
saw the first show held at the new King’s Park that was formed
in 1905-06 where the Show is still held today.
